My Dear Friends.........

I just want to thank my beautiful Wife and Family...... our wonderful Officers.....their Ladies.....our fantastic Court.....all of those talented and dedicated people who helped make our Bal Masque such a success....and, of course, our Regal King and Queen............

Last evening former Spartan Queen, Miss Kathaleen Mary "Katie" Mercer, reigned over the Bal Masque of the Krewe of Zeus.

Re: Excalibur Excites the Crowd

My Dear Friends..........

Last evening the Krewe of Excalibur staged their Annual Bal Masque and Supper Dance in the Great Hall of The Pontchartrain Center.

The tableau, we know, went off without a hitch.....and was, as usual, lovely.

Excalibur always delights their audience...and last evening certainly was no exception.

We hail the beautiful Captain, Co-Captain, The Officers, King Tom, Queen Jamie, the Court, and the Krewe of Excalibur.

Re: Centurions Celebrates

My Dear Friends.........

Last evening saw the Marriott Hotel "rock'in" with the sounds of Centurions....as the legions of Rome staged their Annual Bal Masque, performed to a capacity crowd.

Music and dance, as usual, highlighted the evening....as Centurions presented their Court to rhythm and rock.

We salute the Captain, First Lady, Officers, Court, and Krewe of Centurions............

Re: Okeanos Looks at Bygone Days

My Dear Friends..........

Last evening the great Krewe of Okeanos held their annual Bal Masque in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel.

"Gone, but not forgotten" was their theme....as they brought us back to New Orleans' days gone by.

As is their tradition, the Maids of the Court randomly chose a flower bouquet...each with a covered rose.  One is yellow.....and that Maid becomes Queen.  It was, of course, very exciting.

The Bal Masque was lovely....the food was great...and the company (including Spartan Family Members....and costumers extraordinaire....Matt and Sally Hedrick) was "the best".

A big "tip of the Spartan helmet" to the wonderful Captain, First Lady, Officers, and Court of Okeanos.  It's going to be a great year for them.

Re: Iris Sends a Message

My Dear Friends.........

Friday evening the wonderful Krewe of Iris staged their lavish Carnival Bal Masque in the Great Hall of the Pontchartrain.

Their Bal Masque theme wrapped around the concept of Iris being the "Messenger of the Gods".....and it was great.

Beautiful costumes, wonderful music, and a stunning Court and Krewe graced the ball floor as Iris delighted the crowd on hand.

Congrats to the beautiful Captain, Captain Emeritus, Officers, King and Queen, Court and Krewe of Iris on another fantastic Bal Masque

My Dear Friends........

Last evening the great Krewe of Pygmalion held their lavish Bal Masque and Supper Dance in the Grand Ballroom of the New Orleans Marriott Hotel.

A beautiful and music-filled tableau.....great food.....wonderful entertainment....and lots of fun highlighted the evening as Pygmalion showed their audience all of the "Games People Play"

Re: Endymion Introduces its Monarchs

My Dear Friends.........

"Recipe for a Great Party"

1.  Put 5000 people in the Convention Center
2.  Decorate Liberally
3.  Feed them a Wonderful Meal
4.  Crank up the Music
5.  Introduce Your Queen and Court
6.  Select Your Monarch
7.  Put on an Indoor Parade to Rival some Street Parades
8.  Stir Vigorously with Dancing and Fun
9.  Serve it.....and Call it ENDYMION............................

Yes, last evening Syd and I had the honor of attending the Coronation for the great Krewe of Endymion.

Everything was spectacular.........The venue, the food, the music, the Court....and the fun!!!!!!!!!!

Taking things up another notch was the fact that Captain Ed and First Lady Peggy's Granddaughter, Erica d'Aquin, is reigning as Queen this year.  Queen Erica follows a long family tradition of reigning over Endymion......having had her Mother (Mary Muniz d'Aquin.....whose husband is Endymion V-P, Darryl d'Aquin), her Aunt (Michele Muniz Hanzo.....whose husband, Jimmy Hanzo provided the narration for the evening along with yours truly), and her Aunt (Margie Muniz) reign as Endymion Queens before her.

All in all....it was another brilliant evening for the "God of Youth"..........

Congratulations of Captain Ed, First Lady Peggy, the Officers, the King and Queen, the Court, the Krewe of Endymion, and especially the Muniz and d'Aquin Families.  It's going to be a "banner year" for Endymion

Re: The First Parade of Carnival & The Snow Queen

My Dear Friends.........

Last evening Syd and I (in the very good company of Bonnie Suthon.....Iris Lt. and Wife of Spartan Secretary, Henry Suthon) made our way to the New Orleans Street Car Barn to take in the first parade of Carnival..........The Phunny Phorty Phellows, who ride the streetcar through New Orleans on their annual roll.  The parade was, as usual, short....but wonderful......and I even caught a PPP Medallion Bead!

We then traveled to Jesuit High School for the ballet concert of the Jefferson Ballet Theater.  We were part of a huge crowd that was treated to a wonderful evening of ballet, featuring their production of "The Snow Queen" choreographed by the Artistic Directors of JBT, Kim and Kenny Beck.  Now....if those names sound familiar, that's because Kenny is one of our great Spartan Officers (with Kim being one of our beautiful Spartan Officers' Wives).  The ballet was, of course, perfection.......and we enjoyed the evening immensely.

Happy start of Carnival to you all...........

The Knights of Sparta wish to congratulate our 2011-12 NFL Football Pool Winners.  Our winners are:

1st Place - Henry Suthon

2nd Place - Sean Landry

3rd Place - Split between Bryant & Sally Hedrick

I know that all of us who took part in the pool had a great time (OK, those of us who didn't win did not have as good a time as those who did, but that's the way the football bounces)

A big "Tip of the Spartan Helmet" to Mike Carlson for, again, organizing this year's pool.  The profit from the pool will, of course, go to help underwrite the costs for our Prince and Princess, who represent the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

They are sponsoring a "year-long" fund raising activity in which they are giving away a rifle or shotgun every week during 2012.

Now....I'm no hunter, but my Son-in-Law collects guns.....so I'm entering............and I'm urging you to enter, too.

Re: Spartan Family Members' Performance Coming Up

My Dear Friends..........

Spartan Officer, Kenny Beck, and his lovely and talented Wife, Kim, are now the Artistic Directors of the Jefferson Ballet Theater (one of the wonderful dance companies that will perform in our 2012 Sparta Bal Masque).

Their Winter Dance Concert (featuring a performance of "The Snow Queen" choreographed by Kenny and Kim) will take place on January 6, 2012, at Jesuit High School.

A flyer for the event is attached (and below).

Many of us will be meeting just outside the New Orleans Street Car Barn (just off Carrollton Ave.) to view the Phunny Phorty Phellows Parade (the first Carnival Parade of the Season on Kings' Day) that evening at 7:00 p.m., going straight to Jesuit for the concert, and then going out for a late snack.

We hope you will join us in the evening........and help to support the Jefferson Ballet Theater, which is a vital cultural part of our city.......and of Sparta.

Re: Sparta Gives Back for the Holidays

My Dear Friends..........

A wonderful crowd of Spartans and Spartan Family Members gathered this evening to celebrate the Holidays at the Annual Knights of Sparta Holiday Party.

What an evening!!!!!!!!!!

I want to thank Carol Geraci for spearheading (and preparing) our sumptuous banquet (and it was marvelous) and for her creative decorations.  Also thanks to Bob Geraci for (what else) our great music......Pattie Lewis for (again, what else) the fantastic desserts....and my daughter, Erin, for coordinating our Holiday Gift Exchange (boy....were the Spartans generous to each other).

I am happy to say that, because of the wonderful planning that went into this event, we were able to realize a income over expenses of $300.

I am also very, very honored to tell you that we have decided that Sparta should use those funds to share the joy of the holidays with those who may not be as fortunate as we.  Therefore, Sparta is donating that $300 to charity to go toward making holiday food and gift baskets for the disadvantaged.  This is one of those times when I am proudest to be a Spartan..........

May the blessings of the holiday season be with all of us........and may we all share our joy with those in need..........

Re: Former Queen Extends Her Reign

My Dear Friends..........

We have received some exciting news from the Mercer Family.........

This year, as some of you may know, the Krewe of Zeus established a new way of choosing a Queen.  The Zeus "Muses" (what we would call Maids of the Court) each had a chance to be Queen.  This honor was drawn by lot.

As it happens our beautiful former Spartan Queen, Katie Mercer, was that lucky young lady....and will reign as Queen of Zeus for 2012.

Katie's Father and Brothers have ridden in Zeus for many year and we know that she, and her family, are very excited......and we are certainly excited for them.

I know that each of us will do our best to make this year great for Katie, as we certainly will do for younger Sister, Keri...who is one of our absolutely beautiful Spartan Maids this year......and will reign as our Spartan Queen in 2014.

And so.........it will be a busy year for the Mercer Family....and I know that we will do all that we can to help make it a memorable one.......as the Queen extends here reign to the streets of Metairie.....

Hail to the Queen.........

Just wanted to share a song with you that my boyfriend and I co-wrote called "Goodbye NOLA"!  It is a song about how people who come to New Orleans for Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest or just to enjoy our city visit here and the heart and soul of New Orleans gets in their blood and they know they will be back!  I thought everyone would particularly like the line about Mardi Gras Kings and Queens!!!  When Winston played it in Shreveport, our two queens Erin and Jackie sang that part really loud!  We are hoping to have CDs printed in time for the coronation and be able to give them out to people that would like a copy!  If you can't open the file, you can go to this link and it starts playing automatically.  www.winstonhallmusic.com.  See everyone at the Soiree.

Never let it be said that this humble Captain will not shamelessly plug an endeavor by any of our Spartan Family members.....especially one of our Officers.

Spartan Officer, Kenny Beck, and his very lovely and talented Wife, Kimberly, are now the directors of the Myra Mier School of Ballet (which is the home of the Jefferson Ballet Theatre and the Crescent City Ballet).

Re: We've Come a Long Way, Baby

It's midnight....and that means that it's August 29th.........

I bet you could all tell me what you were doing exactly 6 years ago.  Yes, it's that day that Katrina struck.

I guess this email is sent to remind us all how far we have come in those 6 years.  I remember newscasters predicting that it would take 5 or more years to just clean out the mess in New Orleans left behind by Katrina..........and here we are 6 years later with our entire area rebuilt and thriving.

That is not to say that some work still is ahead........but, the spirit of New Orleans and Carnival has defied all of the odds (and the naysayers) and our way of life is intact.

We are rebuilt.........we are strong.........and we still love our Mardi Gras.........

Hail to the "Big Easy"...........

Re: Thoth Rocks

My Dear Friends......

How do you make the perfect summer cocktail.........

1 part fun.......1 part great music......1 part good friends......and mix generously with a large quantity of Thoth!

Yes.....the Thoth Summer Dance last evening had plenty of each of those ingredients....and much, much more..........

Syd and I (in the company of Spartan Jr. Captain, Brandon Bogle....Spartan President, Bob Geraci and his lovely Wife, Carol....and an overflowing crowd of Mardi Gras Regulars) joined the great Krewe of Thoth at Mardi Gras World for a wonderful night of sights and sounds.

A highlight of the evening was a "mini parade" through the hall featuring the 2012 Thoth Court on floats and a marching band.

All in all....it was another fantastic night for the "God of Knowledge"........and we congratulate the Captain, First Lady, Officers, Officers' Ladies, Court, and Krewe of Thoth.....

Re: 6 Years Ago, and Today

My Dear Friends...........

6 Years ago it was also a Saturday.  The Sparta $10,000 Raffle Party was over the night before........but, we were not celebrating our success.  My family and I (like most of us) were on the road fleeing the fury that Hurricane Katrina was about to unleash upon our area.

I still remember the fear and uncertainty of that time.......and I know what the people of our Eastern Seaboard are now feeling.

The Knights of Sparta and I ask that we all keep our fellow Americans in our thoughts and prayers...that they can "weather the storm" as successfully as we did, and get back to a normal life as soon as possible.

We also ask that you keep us aware of any of our Spartan Family or Carnival Family Members that may need our help in the days and weeks to come.  We have a number of Members and friends on the East Coast.....and we will do all that we can to help them.

With hope in our hearts............

Our Spartan Stomp Summer Dance was an overwhelming success tonight.  We had a capacity crowd......wonderful food......great music.....an abundance of fun.....and the chance to share our joy with so many Spartan Family Members!

Of course, so much of the credit for our success goes to our Officers, their Ladies, and the many Sparta Members, Court Members, and Members of our Spartan Family who worked so hard to pull this event together.  It was, truly, a "team effort".

I can only hope that each one of you has the chance to be a part of a wonderful team like that of our "Spartan Family".  It really makes life worth living!

America's Five Most Underrated Cities

(Below is the excerpt about New Orleans)
New Orleans
Population in 2000: 484,674
Population in 2010: 343,829
Decline: 29%

http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/re/gr/5uneworleans_v2.jpg

The Big Easy is shrinking but it hasn't lost its edge.
Photo: flickr|katjusac

Yes, Hurricane Katrina did a number on the city, but there's a lot more than record crowds at Mardis Gras this year, the return of the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four next year and the Super Bowl the year after that to remind the world New Orleans' spirit remains.
That 29% drop looks pretty bad, but compared with the 288,113 people who were in New Orleans when the Census came around post-Katrina in 2007, it's an improvement. Consider that the Bureau of Labor Statistics says jobs in New Orleans have risen 3.5% since 2006, the GDP inched up from $66 billion to $68 billion in that span, the Census says the city's Hispanic population grew by 35,000 post-Katrina and, according to the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau, tourism has returned as New Orleans hotels filled to 97% capacity during Mardi Gras this year.
The tourists downing hurricanes in the French Quarter aren't the best measure of this city's draw, however. Visitors as well as locals ranked New Orleans No. 1 in the country for local joints and cafes, according to Travel+Leisure and tops in the country for people watching, cocktail hour and the singles/bar scene -- in fact, No. 1 in more categories than any other city in the country, including former No. 1 New York.

It is sometimes amazing how much a Captain misses about his own krewe…or in this case their web site.

I just found out that our brilliant Web Master, Ron Kogos, uploaded the artist renderings of our 2011 floats to the web site (to to the “about” section of the web site and click on “signature floats and parade units”).  He animated the entire parade…with the musical selections that inspired each float.

Sooooooooooo…….go to our web site (www.knightsofsparta.com) – go to the above section….and enjoy a re-telling of our 2011 parade as it goes by on the screen.

Re: Spartan Family Members Shine in Jesuit Production

My Dear Friends............

Last evening Syd and I took in the theatrical production of "Kiss Me Kate" staged by the Philelectic Society of Jesuit High School.  Also in last evening's audience were Spartan Family Members, Sally & Bryant Hedrick....with girls (grandgirls) on hand, and Riley Katz.....in the company of a very lovely young lady.

We, of course, were drawn to this production due to the fact that Spartan Officer, Kenny Beck, was the choreographer....and former Spartan Bal Masque actor, and long time Sparta supporter, Kate Arthurs was the director.  However.........we did not favor Jesuit by being in the audience.....they favored us with their wonderful production!

I could not believe that we were witnessing a "high school" musical.  It was sensational!!!!!!!!!!  The acting, the singing, the dancing, the staging, the scenery.........all were worthy of any "top notch" theater production that I have seen in the New Orleans area.

There are still 2 performances left (Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and a Sunday Matinee at 2:30 p.).  I urge you to take in this wonderful musical..........you will be glad to did........

Re: A Gift from the Heir Apparent

My Dear Friends...........

Many of you will find it no great revelation that our 2012 incoming King of Sparta is Mr. Frank D'Alfonso Foster (who previously reigned as King Sparta XLIX).........probably because he has been telling everyone he knows....and with good reason.

Well.......in any case....His Incoming Highness has just made a wonderful endowment to our organization.  Frank and his lovely Wife, Stacy, have purchased 6 new Herald Trumpets (not the plastic replicas.....but real, brass, 3 stop, working Herald Trumpets) that they have generously donated to Sparta...along with leather carrying cases in which to store and protect them.

Frank is also working with me to design and execute new banners that will hang from these trumpets which will be carried by our Spartan Heralds to announce the arrival of our future Kings at our Bal Masques.

I cannot tell you how excited we are about these wonderful accompaniments to our "Sparta Traditions".........and we thank Frank and Stacy (along with Daughter...and future Spartan Queen...Margaret Rose, and Son...and future Spartan Page and Herald...Enzo) for these wonderful gifts.
