Sept. 3, 2010 Re: Two Carnival Families Unite My Dear Friends........... It gives me great pleasure to tell you that Joe Exnicios and Fran Markland have decided to "tie the knot"......... It is always wonderful when Carnival people get together......and the Exnicios and Markland/Debroy families go waaaaaayyyyyyy back in Mardi Gras tradition. We all, I know, wish Joe and Fran the very best for many years of joy together........ Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
August 31, 2010 Re: Arthur on National TV My Dear Friends........... Just in case you did not see the "Today Show" this morning.........Carnival's own, Arthur Hardy, was on and being interviewed with none other than Sandra Bullock! If you missed it....you can see the clip on Youtube.com (click here)......and, incidentally, Arthur is the one on the left with the mustache......the beautiful one on the right is Sandra Bullock!!!!!!!!!! In any event, we raise our Spartan Swords to our friend, Arthur, for the well-deserved notoriety..........and the rumors about Arthur staring along with Sandra in an upcoming blockbuster movie are, as yet, unconfirmed!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
August 31, 2010 Re: Birthdays Aplenty My Dear Friends.......... I have also found out that our reigning "Royal Consort" is celebrating her birthday today.......... Happy Birthday to Bonnie Suthon........and, for Henry's sake, we hope he doesn't forget!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
August 31, 2010 Re: Happy Birthday, Penny My Dear Friends......... A "Tip of the Spartan Helmet" to the great Captain of The Krewe of Thoth on his Birthday! Happy Birthday, Penny................ Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" (The "Unfortunately Older Than Penny" Captain) and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta |
August 29, 2010 Re: Katrina+5 My Dear Friends........... 5 years ago today the newly elected Captain of The Knights of Sparta (namely me) sat at his daughter and son-in-law's home in Mississippi and watched the fury of Katrina. He also wondered what would ever become of his beloved City of New Orleans....its people.....and its Mardi Gras traditions. And now.......after 5 tough, but satisfying years.......that Captain looks back and wonders how he ever doubted our re-birth and re-vitalization. Is there work left to be done.............of course. However, our city has come so far in these 5 short years. Those who live here certainly know it as well as I do...........However, I want everyone around the world that receives my emails to know that the New Orleans area is more than "alive and well".........we are "thriving".....and so is Mardi Gras!!!!!!!!!!!! The economy is, of course, having its effect.........but that has happened before (many times). We are looking forward to a GREAT Carnival this year....and a fifth affirmation of the fact that New Orleans will not "roll over and play dead" for anyone. We partied in the streets 5 years ago........and we will party in the streets this year....and years to come. It's what we do.......and it's part of living in New Orleans!!!!!!!!!!!! And so........today we look back 5 years. Not to a day that shattered our hopes and dreams and left our city in ruins...........but to a day that would eventually bring out the very best in the "Spirit of New Orleans and its People" and allow us to show the world that "we will survive"! KATRINA WHO???????????????? Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" (The "Who Dat Say They Gonna Beat Down New Orleans" Captain) and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta |
August 28, 2010 Re: (By Way of and Old Friend) - K+5 My Dear Friends............. So many of you know and love our dear friend, Brandon Mary. Brandon was the wonderful Captain of The Knights of Babylon until a "witch" named Katrina displaced him first to California......and then all the way "Down Under" To Australia. Of course, Brandon left Babylon in the very capable hands of Captain Jack Jacob (and we certainly love and respect Jack).........However, so many of us also miss seeing and being with Brandon. Below is an email that I just received from our "Aussie" buddy............Enjoy............
Best..............
"Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" (The "G'Day, Mate" Captain) and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friends: Five years ago today, “we” were stuck in traffic for 10 hours evacuating home in anticipation of Hurricane Katrina. Fast forward . . . . BOOM-BOOM-POW! Part of the “we” was added to, part of the “we” disappeared and here I am in Perth with my Girls (the best “we” to me). The attached, by my Cousin Andy Stone (a/k/a “Vince Vance”), is spot on for so many of us – “Katrina changed me forever, but I’m still New Orleans.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V86xxTm8-ek Enjoy, reflect and love (and forward this link!). August 23, 2010 Re: The Fun Begins on the Royal Culinary Tour This evening over 50 happy folks joined King Jack and Queen Laura at The Italian Pie Restaurant for the "kick off" of our Royal Culinary Tour...... We all had a "ball"..........and you can get in on the fun.......Just look for our emails about our next stop on the tour........ Bon Appetite........... Best.............. August 22, 2010 Re: Thoth's Terrific Get-Together My Dear Friends......... Last evening the great Krewe of Thoth (as they always do) kicked off the upcoming Carnival Season with their "End of the Summer" Party at Mardi Gras World........ Syd and I (in the good company of Sparta President, Bob Geraci, and his lovely Wife, Carol....Spartan Captain Emeritus, Charles Andrews, and his lovely Wife, Patricia....and Spartan Jr. Captain, our Grandson, Brandon Bogle) were honored to be with Thoth for this wonderful evening. It is always grand, after a summer of other activities, to see so many Carnival people...and to talk about the season ahead. Hail to the Captain, First Lady, Officers, Officers' Ladies, Court, and Krewe of Thoth............You make all Egypt proud!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
August 5, 2010 Re: Let's Help the Lions Club My Dear Friends.............. In a previous email, I made you aware of a very special raffle that the Lions Club of Metairie was holding to further their great work with helping visually and hearing impaired people. Below is a final reminder from Wayne Lee (Lions Club Member and Great Captain of The Krewe of Carrollton) about that event. Syd and I have our tickets............Please join us in supporting this worthwhile charity. Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" The Captain and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Need your assistance for the Lions Club of Metairie We are sponsoring a fund raiser raffle for the Lions Club of Metairie. As many of you know the Lions Club is very involved with assisting people in our area with regards to hearing and eyesight. All proceeds from this raffle will be used toward this end. August 4, 2010 Re: Surprise, You're the Queen My Dear Friends........... Several of us have known for some time the identity of our 2011 Queen of Sparta......... Until this evening, however, Her Highness was unaware of her "Royal Status"..... Syd, "Jr. Captain" Brandon, and I were honored to have dinner this evening with the Queen Mom, Queen Dad, and Her Royal Highness.....and surprise her with the news that she was going to be our Queen. And so........The Knights of Sparta are very pleased to announce that our 2011 Queen is Miss Laura Hutton Chapman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John H. "Chappy" Chapman. Now, many of you will know the Queen Mom and Dad as the owners of "Chappy's" Restaurant of the Gulf Coast (at least until Katrina did her thing). The Chapmans now own and operate Chappy's Restaurant in Nashville, TN....and are the "hit of the town". Chappy and Starr also reigned several years ago as King and Queen of The Krewe of Iris....so they are no strangers to Carnival. You will remember that our King, and his beautiful wife, also have a background in Iris (Melinda having been a Queen of Iris..and King Jack having been involved in several Carnival Organizations). Thanks, Iris......we own you a big favor for bringing us such wonderful Monarchs. Queen Laura is a sophomore at Loyola University here in New Orleans with a major in theater and dance......and she carries on the Spartan tradition of beautiful, talented, and gracious Queens in every way.

July 30, 2010 Re: Family & Friends dinner at Schnell's My Dear Friends............ If you look at the "Gallery" section of our Spartan Web Site -- you will see the our wonderful Webmaster, Ron Kogos, has uploaded the pictures of our recent Friends and Family Dinner at Schnell's Restaurant. It was a great evening......and we encourage all of our Members, Families, and Friends to join us for our upcoming Royal Culinary Tour. Enjoy the pictures.......... Best.............. July 11, 2010 Re: A Marriage Made in Mardi Gras My Dear Friends.......... Syd and I have just returned from the wonderful wedding of Mike and Danielle Haydel. Mike, as you may know, is the Captain of the Krewe of Mid City.....and, in our opinion, both he and his lovely bride are two of the nicest people in Carnival (and there are certainly a lot of wonderful people in Carnival). It was great being with so many of our friends from the Haydel and Fricke Families, from the Mardi Gras Community, and Mike and Danielle's friends........ We all, I know, wish the new Mr. and Mrs. Haydel the very best for a fantastic life together...... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" The Captain and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta |
July 10, 2010 Re: Happy Birthday to the Reigning Queen My Dear Friends.......... 26 years ago today, the Mulnick Family was moving into our new home in Metairie (in which we still live). That in itself certainly does not rate a "Journal Entry".....However, while we were moving in.....our across the street neighbors were putting out a sign in their front yard announcing the arrival of a new baby girl. Who could have imagined that little baby would grow up to reign over The Knights of Sparta as their Queen for 2010. Yes........HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR REIGNING QUEEN, KATIE MERCER......... Hail to the Queen........... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" The Captain of The Knights of Sparta |
July 06, 2010 Re: Spartan Maid Engaged My Dear Friends........... We have had some wonderful news in our Spartan Family.......... It involves one of our beautiful 2010 Maids, Ariel Junot.........and I will let her Mom's words (see below) speak for themselves.......... Congrats......and lots of love from all of us to Ariel and the Junot Family......... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" The Captain and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta ------------------------------------------------------------- The Junot Family would like to share some very happy news with our Sparta family. I am so Honored and Excited to tell you that Ariel became engage over this 4th of July weekend. She went to California to spend it with her boyfriend (Rueben Breaux) who (as you might know) is in the Marines and is stationed at Fort Pendleton. He is a wonderful man and makes our girl very happy. We have known his family since he was 8 and Ariel 6, so no surprise there... But we wanted to share this Special news with all of you. Re: Sparta (and Endymion) Member on the Mend My Dear Friends.......... We have learned that Sparta Member (and Endymion Treasurer), Joe Trovato, has been ill for several weeks with a rather nasty infection. He is, however, on the mend....and, when I visited him yesterday, was getting back to his jovial self. We wish Joe all the best for a speedy continued recovery. Best..............

July 1, 2010 Re: Hail to the Chief........ My Dear Friends......... I am back from vacationing in sunny (and cool) California with my family.....and glad to be back in the "swing of things"......... Today I report to you on a very happy occasion....for our good friend, Mike Yenni (excuse me...."THE HONORABLE" Mike Yenni) was inaugurated today as the Mayor of Kenner. Mike has, it seems, spent his whole life in the service of the public of Jefferson Parish and Kenner.....and we know that he will make a visionary and straight-dealing Mayor (as did his predecessor, Mayor Ed Muniz). And so...........a big "Tip of the Spartan Helmet" to Mayor Mike; his lovely fiancé, Michelle; the entire Yenni Family; and a special remembrance of Mike's Grandfather, Joe Yenni...and Mike's Uncle, Mike Yenni who would be so proud today......... Hail to the new Chief............ Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" The Captain |
May 30, 2010 Re: Sparta Fish Fry My Dear Friends.......... The 2010-11 Sparta Fish Fry is "in the books"....and what a wonderful event it was.......... The food was GREAT........the music was KICK'IN.....the prizes were FANTASTIC...and the fun was OVERFLOWING............ Thank you to all who attended and helped to make the day so incredible......... And...........a very special thank you to all who gave of their time, talents, and resources to insure our success. Every Officer went above and beyond (as usual). The Ladies did an incredible job. The Ft. Lts, Special Member Helpers, etc. did all that they could. I am so proud to be a Spartan.....and stand shoulder to shoulder with such fine folks.................. HAIL SPARTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
April 26, 2010 My Dear Friends........... This evening The Knights of Sparta held their first Krewe Meeting of the 2011 Season. My profound thanks to our Officers and Officers' Ladies for the wonderful dinner that was enjoyed by all. It is a sure bet that everyone who attends our Krewe Meetings has a great time. Also.......It was officially announced this evening that KING SPARTA LIX (59TH) will be none other than Mr. John J. "Jack" Richard. Jack is a member of Sparta, and has also been involved with many Carnival organizations throughout the years. We also salute his lovely wife, Melinda. Now......we usually address the King's Wife as "The Royal Consort".....however, because Melinda has previously reigned as the Queen of Iris (one of our beloved Sister Krewes).......we have given her the title of "Queen Consort". We know that Jack will reign over our Krewe with dignity and honor....and also have a wonderful time doing so.......... Our thanks to all who came out this evening for our meeting.............. Best..............

April 7, 2010 Re: Knights of Atlantis My Dear Friends......... Warren Serigne (who has helped Sparta with our marching units for many years) tells us that he is involved with a new krewe that is forming, The Knights of Atlantis. They are holding their first social event, a crawfish boil, on Saturday, April 17th. All details can be viewed on their web site - Knights of Altantis Web Site (www.knightsofatlantis.org) We wish Atlantis well on their journey....... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |

February 17, 2010 Re: Mardi Gras day My Dear Friends……… Yesterday was Mardi Gras Day…..and Syd and I (along with Spartan Family Members Michael and Jean Vincent….Sandra Guarisco…..Gary and Rosemary Fortmayer…..King Henry and Bonny Suthon…..The entire Hedrick Family…..and Bob and Carol Geraci) set out early for the home of Spartan Officer, Kenny Beck…and his lovely wife, Kimberly. Kenny and Kim (living on historic St. Charles Ave.) are kind enough each year to play host for our “motley crew (not krewe)” and we always look forward to being with them for Carnival Day. The REX Parade was, as always, wonderful….and the Truck Parade was fun and family oriented. How could Mardi Gras Day be any better. We were with family and friends……under sunny skies….with good food….and good spirits (emotional…not bottled, I mean).
Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
February 17, 2010 Re: Zeus Parade My Dear Friends………… Monday evening saw Syd and I (along with Spartan President…and Zeus Parade Chairman…Bob Geraci, and his lovely wife, Carol) at the Zeus Parade. I had the honor, again, of narrating the procession for Zeus. Zeus, as always, was “first class”….from the lovely flower decorations at the stands to the beautiful floats and bands. It was a great evening. Of note is the fact that former Saints star (and NFL Hall of Famer) Ricky Jackson was the Grand Marshall…and he looked like he was having a ball!!!!!!!!!!!! A “job well done” to Captain Phil…..First Lady Maureen…..the Officers…and the Men of Zeus. You certainly ruled Metairie on Lundi Gras!!!!!!!!!

February 17, 2010 Re: .Babylon, Okeanos, Mid City, and Thoth Parades.... My Dear Friends………. Not much sleep on Sunday morning……and we were up and out again. Syd and I made our way to the Hilton Hotel to meet all of the entourage for the great Krewe of Thoth (which included Spartan Captain Emeritus, Charles Andrews and his lovely Wife, Patricia). After a limo ride to the head of the Parade for a champagne toast to the King….we wound our way to the Hotel Intercontinental for all of the parades. We were treated to a lovely brunch by Thoth……and, although it is not the Official Toasting Stand for some of the other parades, I did get the chance to go up on the stands early to catch Capatin Jack and the Babylon Parade (that was rescheduled from Thursday)…and Captain Bal and the Okeanos Parade. Both parades looked great. It was then my honor, as I have done for many years, to narrate the Mid City Parade from those stands (the Official Toasting Stands for Mid City). The sunlight really highlights Mid City’s foiled floats….and the parade looked GREAT. My congratulations to long time Mid City Family Members..King Brian Thumm and Queen Nicole Godijohn-Baird. You both looked great……. We then stayed on the stands (which now became the Official Toasting Stands for Thoth) and I had the honor of narrating their parade. Thoth is BIG……..Thoth is BRASSY…..Thoth is FUN!!!!!!!! Their 2010 theme of “Thoth is all Mixed Up” saw the God of the Nile’s floats depicting all of the crazy mixed drinks that you could imagine. Now…there were some that I knew……but so many that I didn’t! What a wonderful parade…… Thoth, as always, put on a great show. A “wave of my Spartan sword” to Captain Penny…..First Lady, Cindy….the Officers…and the Krewe of Thoth. I’d toast you with a beer if I drank……..but, I’ll just have to use Diet Coke!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" (The "Lucky, But Not too Heavy a Drinker" Captain) and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta |
February 17, 2010 Re: Endymion My Dear Friends….. You all know where I can be found on the Saturday before Mardi Gras Day……..AT ENDYMION!!!!!!!! I got to the Superdome early and, as always, made sure the costumes for our Captain, Queen, King, and Maids were in place (as they certainly were). I then handled my yearly task of putting “reserved” signs on the front rows of chairs for our Endymion Mass. Now….I am not quite sure how this Jewish boy wound up with that assignment years ago……..but, I am honored to continue that tradition, as well as the tradition of attending that Mass each year on the day of our Parade. I find that hour of reflection and prayer to be uplifting…and it allows many of us to put the Parade (and Mardi Gras itself) into the proper prospective. I have to thank Endymion Float Lt., Kenny Beck, for all of his help with the King, Queen, and Court. Kenny has given up a good deal of his Endymion Day each year to be with us and help see that the young ladies of the Court are happy and treated like “Royalty”. After a joyous bus ride to City Park…..we got the Court onto their floats and made sure they were ready to go…..and then it was on to my float to get ready for the Parade. Well………back to the Parade. It was a cool, but lovely, evening…….and the Parade was FABULOUS!!!!! I am so glad to see that, since Katrina, the Endymion crowds are so much less “bawdy” and have reverted to a much more “family oriented” demeanor. It restores my faith in Carnival…and in the joyous goodness of the people who come to the parades. The parade rolled well……and the ride through the Dome was spectacular. Of course, as always, I had my special sign for Margie Muniz (the Captain’s lovely Daughter). I have said a special “hello” from the float in that way for many, many years….and Margie still says she looks forward to seeing the sign each year (or perhaps she is just humoring an aging float rider………). In any event…I love it!!!!!! The Extravaganza was simply OVERWHELMING. The crowd….the entertainment….and the fun. It was Endymion at its best!!!!!! I am so proud to be a part of the success of Captain Ed….First Lady, Peggy….President, Dan….the Board of Directors…and the Krewe of Endymion. HAIL TO THE GOD TO YOUTH………..HAIL ENDYMION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
February 17, 2010 Re: Mid City Ball My Dear Friends…. Friday was spent, as always, with Mid City. Syd and I went downtown early for rehearsal…and then to Mr. B’s for lunch (in the company of Mid City’s General Chairman, John Tessitore…unfortunately his lovely wife, Shirley, could not make it down until later), which is an annual outing for us. I was, as has been the case for many years, honored to write and narrate the Mid City Bal Masque…and it was outstanding. The costumes, the music (by Maestro B. J. Perez and the Orchestre de Carnival), the presentation, etc. were splendid……and reflected Mid City’s tradition of wonderful Bal Masques in a pageant entitled “Mid City Gets Lucky”. Spartan President, Bob Geraci, was also on the Committee…and was accompanied by his beautiful wife, Carol, that evening. Of course, the Supper Dance after the Ball was great…and the company was superb…….and we did get the chance to drop in on the “Beans and Jeans” Pre-Parade Party for Endymion (although a bit over-dressed) after we left Mid City…..and the Endymion “Who Dats” were out in force!!!!!!!!!!! To Captain Mike….Captain’s Lady (and returning Queen), Danielle….the Officers…the Court…and the Krewe of Mid City….I say that “Nothing could FOIL your lovely evening”!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
February 17, 2010 Re" Babylon My Dear Friends…… Please forgive my postponement of “Journal” entries for the past several days….Syd and I have just been so much “on the run” that I could not sit at the computer to collect my thoughts until now. I do, however, appreciate the emails from many of you requesting updates…..I am glad that you actually read my “ramblings” and consider them noteworthy. And now……on to business……… Thursday saw Syd and I (along with Spartan President, Bob Geraci) with Babylon. Of course, as most of you know, the Babylon Parade was postponed because of the rain until Sunday morning (which I will write about in another entry). However, the Bal Masque and Supper Dance went on as scheduled. Babylon had a beautiful Bal Masque with the theme of “Masks of Men”. It is wonderful how each krewe has its own “signature” elements to their ball or parade that make them unique….and, certainly, Babylon is no exception. From the distinctive Captain’s music……to the krewe tableaus….to the singing of “God Bless America” after the final whistle……..the Babylon Bal Masque is a sight to behold. The supper dance was also fantastic…with great food and wonderful music.

February 10, 2010 Re: Thor My Dear Friends.......... After catching Druids....Syd and I were off to Metairie to see the great Thor Parade.......... Captain Mac looked regal on his float....but (as it is with Sparta) he might have been "upstaged" by the Jr. Captain, Austin!!!!!!!!!! Thor had wonderful, full floats....and a fun theme of "Children's Stories".......... "The Crunk" seemed to be the theme song of the day for many of the marching units.........and WE LOVED IT!!!!!!!!! We even caught a "black and gold" football from the King........... Hail to the great Captain, Jr. Captain, First Lady, Officers, and Krewe of Thor........ Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
February 10, 2010 Re: Ancient Druids My Dear Friends............. Well.......the parade season is about half way over....and this evening had Syd and I off to Magazine St. to catch The Ancient Druids Parade. Of course, the identity of the "Arch Druid" is never given out (and I will respect that tradition), but I can tell you that, for those who know the Druids, that profile was unmistakable!!!!!! Hail to our good friend, the Arch Druid........... The Druids Parade was wonderful with their theme of "Druid Holes". Key Holes, Donut Holes, and the 19th Hole were just a few of their well executed floats. Also, the bands were great! A "tip of the Spartan Helmet" to our friends, The Ancient Druids...........On the "hole", your parade was WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
February 10, 2010 Re: Saints Parade My Dear Friends........... I have never watched the Endymion Parade (having been a rider for the past almost 35 years). This evening, however, I got a taste of what it must be like to be "in that crowd" as Syd and I...along with most everyone within 1000 miles of New Orleans...turned out to watch the Saints Victory Parade. I'LL TAKE BEING ON THE FLOAT ANY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You couldn't move......you couldn't see......you couldn't hear.....your couldn't tell where one person left off, and the other started!!!!!!!!!! What a night. That having been said..........I would not have missed it for the world!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was one of the most moving experiences of my life. Everyone was in a good mood....everyone was cheering....everyone wanted the feeling to last forever......... If you were not a Saints fan tonight.....I pity you......for you will never know what complete elation is!!!!!!!!!! Our Saints are "World Champions"............and we are part of history................ Hail to the fans..............Hail to the Saints!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
Feburary 9, 2010 Re: On the Move Again My Dear Friends........ Last evening saw Syd and I "out and about" again........ First.......We went to rehearsal for Friday Night's Mid City Ball. Captain Mike has everything in hand...and the Mid City Ball (which I have the honor to write and narrate) should be spectacular. Then for me, it was on to the final Krewe Meeting for Endymion. Things are on schedule for a banner year for "The God of Youth". The parade is ready to go....with Saints owner, Tom Benson, as Grand Marshall....and a number of players slated to ride. Also the entertainment line-up for the Extravaganza (with Big Swing and the Ballroom Blasters, Party on the Moon, Lenard Skynard, and Cowboy Mouth) sounds GREAT. I wish I could tell you to buy your tickets now.....but the Extravaganza is already completely sold out! Get them early next year!!!!!!!!!! Then, with the "usual suspects" in tow...it was off to Masparo's in the Quarter for some calamari and sandwiches (an Endymion "after meeting" tradition)........ Tonight is, of course, the SAINTS PARADE........and we will be there in force............ HAIL MID CITY Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
February 8, 2010 Re: THE SAINTS!!!!!!!! My Dear Friends............ What more is there to say..................... WHO DAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
Feburary 8, 2010 Re: King Arthur My Dear Friends............ After Carrollton on Sunday, Syd and I took to the streets to see the great parade of King Arthur. Of course, their Captain is our very own float builder....and we love him dearly. King Arthur put a wonderful parade on the streets with colorful floats, great marching units, and a fun-loving krewe. A "tip of the Spartan helmet" to the Captain, Officers, Court, and Krewe of King Arthur. Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
February 8, 2010 Re: Pygmalion My Dear Friends.......... Of course, being in our Sparta Parade, I did not get the chance to see the Pygmalion Parade that followed our procession. I understand, however, that they put on a wonderful parade.....and enjoyed their move to Saturday night. I must apologize to Captain Jack. We wanted to do a toast before the parade of the two Captains, Officers, and Kings. We ran into a few logistical problems (and, thankfully solved them in good spirits and time) before our parade and did not get back to see him and his krewe. We also moved out of the formation area a little early to try to get Pygmalion on the street in good time. Please know, however, that we welcome our "Brother and Sister Krewe" to the "First Saturday Night" and hope that we will be able to give the people of New Orleans a "one/two parade punch" for years to come. HAIL PYGMALION................... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
February 8, 2010 Re: Carrollton Parade My Dear Friends.......... With VERY little rest, Syd and I were up and out on Sunday morning for the Carrollton Parade, which I had the honor of narrating. Carrollton chose the Sheraton Hotel as their Official Toasting Stand location.........and it was a sunny and wonderfully fun parade day. They put on a fantastic parade.....with beautiful floats and great bands. It is always wonderful to be with the Men of Carrollton........... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
Feburary 8, 2010 Re: SPARTA!!!!!!!!!!!! My Dear Friends................ Saturday was bright, sunny, and PERFECT......... Our Knights of Sparta Parade went off without hitch (or at least without a hitch that we could not solve). I don't know how to describe the feeling of riding my horse at the front of our parade knowing all of the time and effort put in (by our Officers, their ladies, our King, our Queen, our Court, our Lieutenants, our Krewe, and all of the other members of our Spartan Family) has gotten us to the point of being on the street and bringing joy to so many people. I want to say thank you to so many people......and I could write volumes to them about the parts that they have played in our success. I will spare you, however, and just tell you that I will try to thank them individually for all that they do. I hope that the Sparta Parade brings the tradition of the "old time" Carnival parades to our streets....and that it reflects the respect we have for Mardi Gras and the people of New Orleans. Of course...the "Spartan Spree" party after the parade was, again, an overwhelming success. When Sparta parties..........WE PARTY!!!!!!!!!! The Officers and I can't wait to get started on a bigger and better 2011 season............. HAIL SPARTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
Feburary 8, 2010 Re: Carrollton Bal Masque WELL..............What a busy weekend it was. Carnival Balls, Elections, Parades........AND THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!!!!! I have now had time, however, to compose my thoughts........so here goes.......... Friday evening saw Syd and I at the Carrollton Bal Masque at the Hilton Hotel. It was a beautiful ball, as Carrollton's theme of "It's a Small World" highlighted destinations both far and near around our globe. The costumes were lovely...the music fantastic....the presentation grand...the food delicious...and the company, as always, the best!!!!! Hail to the Captain, First Lady, Officers, Court, and Krewe of Carrollton. You really know how to "Have a Ball".......... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 31, 2010 Re: Who Dat Parade My Dear Friends........... Syd and I (along with Spartan Family Members Gary and Rosemary Fortmayer, John and Lenette Zulli, Donny Grodsky, and Carol Geraci) have just returned from the funniest parade of the year....the "Tribute to Buddy D" Saints Parade......... For those of you who are not local.........Buddy Diliberto was a beloved sports writer and radio & TV personality for many years in New Orleans........and he LOVED the Saints. Of note is the fact that our good friend, Debbie Emerman, is Buddy's Daughter. Buddy, who passed away several years ago, always said that, "When the Saints got into the Superbowl...I'll dance down Canal St. in a red dress"............ Well.............THE SAINTS ARE IN THE SUPERBOWL.......and today, thousands of gentlemen took to the streets of New Orleans in a "wear a dress" parade to honor the Black and Gold...and Buddy D!!! We would not have missed that on a bet.......... WHO DAT SAY DEY GONNA BEAT DEM SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat"

January 31, 2010 Re: Thoth Ball My Dear Friends......... Last evening had Syd and I (along with Spartan President, Bob Geraci, and his lovely wife, Carol.....and so many other Carnival VIPs) attending the Bal Masque of the great Krewe of Thoth. Luscious Libations (mixed drinks...that is) took center stage for Thoth.....and the God of Egypt treated us to a fantastic Bal Masque. Thoth is, of course, traditional when need be..........and also knows how to throw a GREAT party (both before and after the Ball). Hail to the wonderful Captain, First Lady, Officers, Officers' Ladies, Court, and Krewe of Thoth.......... I know that I try always to........"Think Thoth"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 31, 2010 Re: Cubs Carnival My Dear Friends.......... It may sound strange to tell you that, after the entire day and night of the Sparta Bal Masque, Syd and I (along with Spartans Michael and Jean Vincent, Frenchie and Kathleen Cheramie, and Matt and Sally Hedrick and the entire Hedrick Family) were out in force by 10 am on Saturday to see the Annual Metairie Cub Scout Parade. Why were we there, you might ask? Well..........we were there to Hail the Cub Scout King......Matthew Hedrick, IV (our very own Spartan Herald). Matt looked royal indeed....and the parade was wonderful...and generous. HAIL TO THE KING OF THE CARNIVAL CUB SCOUTS.................KING MATT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 31, 2010 Re: Sparta Bal Masque My Dear Friends.......... You are probably wondering why I have not been my usual verbose email self over the past several days. Lord knows there have been enough going on to write about. The simple truth is that this is the first time I have been able to get a moment to write.......... In any event..............here goes............. Friday, of course, was our Sparta Bal Masque. If I had but one word to describe the entire event, it would be PERFECTION!!!!!!!! I could write for hours about the beauty.....the tradition.....the music....the dancing....the acting...the after ball party....and it would not be enough........... And....I could thank the Officers, The Court....The Committee....etc. etc. for pages and pages....and it would not be enough........... Please just know that everyone involved deserves a Spartan Palm Branch for their efforts........ I am the proudest Captain in Carnival..........and love you all............ Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 25, 2010 Re: Funny Time for Rehearsal My Dear Friends.......... It's one hell of a Captain who calls a "read through" rehearsal on the night of the biggest Saints game in history......... And it's a really dedicated Officer and Narrator who would come to that rehearsal. Well.....that's what happened this evening. Spartan Officer, Kenny Beck, who does such a wonderful job each year working with the actors and some of our dancers in our Bal Masque........and Of course, the game was on the big screen TV....and we only worked during commercials and time outs.....but somehow we got through everything and still had time to cheer our Saints to victory. I can only tell you that we are going to have a "Super Bowl" of a Bal Masque....and I thank Kenny and Dane (as well as so many others)..........for all of their hard work......... See you all at the Ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 24, 2010 Re: ....Zeus, Cleopatra, Morpheus, and Isis My Dear Friends....... Yesterday seemed to go on forever........and I am so happy that it did!!!!!!!! After the success of Distribution Day and the Court Luncheon.....Syd and I donned our formal attire and struck out in the company of Spartan President, Bob Geraci....and his beautiful (and talented) wife, Carol, for an evening of Carnival merriment. I had the honor, as I have had for many years, of writing and narrating the Bal Masque for the KREWE OF ZEUS....staged at the Pontchartrain Center. Zeus...as always....staged a beautiful and elegant ball. The costumes were brilliant...the music (by the Orchestre de Carnival) was spectacular....the staging (overseen by Zeus Ball General Chairman, and Spartan Captain Emeritus, Charles Andrews) was perfection.....and the company of a myriad of Carnival regulars was "the best". It is interesting to note the dynamics of a Carnival krewe.......and, over the years, I have noted that the great Captain of Zeus is not only respected by his organization......he is loved......and that certainly says a lot!!!!!!! I am always honored to a part of Zeus..........Hail to the God of Olympus, along with wonderful Captain, Officers, Court and Men of ZEUS!!!!!!!!!!!!! After a modicum of time spent at the Zeus "Post Ball Reception"......Bob, Carol, Syd, and I headed out for a continuation of our Carnival "night on the town". We stopped in at the Cleopatra Ball (that I write and usually narrate) at the Marriott Hotel. Spartan Officer, Kenny Beck...in the company of his lovely and talented wife, Kim, narrated Cleopatra's ball (for I was busy narrating Zeus)...and I received glowing reviews on his work! The party was in full swing when we arrived....and our good friends (The Midnight Special Band) was "raising the roof" with their great music. We also had the pleasure of seeing Cleopatra's Ball General Chairman, John Tessitore (also an Officer of Thoth) and his lovely wife, Shirley at the ball. A big "Tip of the Spartan Helmet" to Captain Tutti, the Officers, Court and beautiful Ladies of Cleopatra. After that, we stopped in for a short while at the Morpheus Ball to say congrats to Captain John and all in attendance. It certainly looked like Morpheus was having a great time. Hail Morpheus!! And..........we also stopped my at the Isis Ball so that Bob could say hi to his friends in the band Orleans. Isis was also "jumping"....and it looked like the evening was a total success. In all......it was a very full day of Carnival activities. Onward to next weekend and...........SPARTA & THOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 24, 2010 Re: Sparta Distribution My Dear Friends........ Saturday morning (and....much too early....I might add) saw the Captain's household in full swing. I was off to Sparta Distribution Day....and it was an overwhelming success. I want to thank all of our Spartan Officers....and many Float Lieutenants and Members....for their help. It is certainly no easy task making sure that every member gets his order filled properly......but, our Spartan leaders were up to that task (as usual). The crowds that line our Spartan parade route are in for some GREAT THROWS on February 6th!!!!!!!!!!! Syd, in the meanwhile, was getting ready for our Annual Court Luncheon, to honor our beautiful Queen Kathaleen Mary Mercer, and her wonderful Court. 60 ladies of the Court, Families, and Guests gathered at the Plimsoll Club to celebrate the season and dine in luxury to honor the Court Ladies of Sparta. Of note is the fact that (despite the rigors of Distribution Day) this Captain (with King Henry...aka Spartan Vice-President Henry Suthon, Returning King Frenchie...aka Spartan Treasurer, Frenchie Cheramie, Former King Michael....aka Spartan Secretary Michael Vincent, and Former King Bob....aka Spartan President, Bob Geraci) stopped in at the luncheon for a very few minutes to welcome the ladies....and bestow roses on all in attendance. The reports that I have received tell me that the 2010 Court Luncheon was an overwhelming success. I wish to thank The First Lady of Sparta (my wife, Syd) and the Officers' Ladies for hosting this beautiful event. I would, of course, be naught were it not for my wife!!!!!!!!!! ........by the way.......as the ladies dined in royal elegance.....those of us at Distribution Day did order several pizzas to fill the void. Oh...the irony of Mardi Gras!!!!!!!!!!!! Hail Sparta!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 24, 2010 Re: Mardi Gras Journal entry addendum- Iris My Dear Friends........... I certainly do not wish to leave out the fact that Spartan Jr. Captain, Brandon Bogle (our Grandson) was one of the escorts for the beautiful Queen of Iris at their Bal Masque....and spent the evening assisting their krewe with the other Committeemen. I cannot put into words my pride in seeing "our Brandon" growing up with the traditions of Carnival. Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 24, 2010 Re: Iris My Dear Friends........... Friday evening saw Syd and I (along with Spartan Officers, Bob Geraci..Frenchie Cheramie...Henry Suthon...and Captain Emeritus Charles Andrews.......and their lovely wives Carol, Kathleen, Bonnie, and Patricia) attending the Bal Masque for wonderful Krewe of Iris. Of course, I have to also include Endymion Captain, Ed Muniz and his beautiful wife, Peggy in my Journal (as I am also an Endymion member). Iris certainly did not disappoint....with a fantastic ball...lavish costumes....very imaginative krewe skits....and superb company. It looks like another "banner year" for the ladies of Iris........ Hail to the Captain, Officers, Court, and Krewe of IRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 19, 2010 Re: Float Signs My Dear Friends.......... Carnival takes one on a few strange journeys....and makes you do things that you would not normally get involved with. The past several days have seen such a journey. The float signs that sit atop the tractors pulling our Sparta floats, telling the crowd the theme of each float, were getting a little "long in the tooth". In fact...there were more coats of paint on them then wood underneath. The decision was made, therefore, to create new float signs. Now...of course....having signs made costs pretty good money. So..........the answer was to make them ourselves. Yesterday saw Spartan Officers Frenchie Cheramie and Bob Geraci (along with your humble Captain) in my front driveway cutting out large float signs from sheets of plywood.....and it went very nicely...until I realized that I did not close the garage door against the sawdust that eventually covered my antique Corvette resting comfortably inside (not to mention the sawdust that covered Syd's new Corvette). Well.........a little rinse and wipe dry remedied those problems.....and my nerves! Today, the same "three musketeers" painted a first coat on the signs (which eventually will bear a large crest of The Knights of Sparta on each side...as well as the float titles). A palm branch, therefore, goes to Frenchie and Bob for all of their hard work. Our floats...and float signs.....are gonna look GREAT!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 17, 2010 Re: Endymion Coronation My Dear Friends........... Just when you think Endymion cannot get any better..........IT DOES!!!!!!!!!!!! Last evening Syd and I (along with too many dear friends to name) attended the Coronation Ball for Endymion. This was held, for the first time, in the Convention Center in New Orleans. I guess the only word that comes close to describing this event is SPECTACULAR!!!!!!! Approximately 3,700 in attendance....a wonderful steak dinner for all (and that ain't easy)......fabulous decor (with Endymion's Signature Floats surrounding the entire room)........some of the best music I have heard (with several local groups and an Atlanta band called "Simply Irresistible....who tore the place apart).......introduction of the Queen and Court.....selection of the King.......and fun, fun, fun!!!!!!!!!! When Captain Ed and Endymion throw a party.........THEY REALLY THROW A PARTY!!!!!!!! Hail to the great Captain, The Officers, the King, the Queen, the Court, and the Krewe of Endymion. I have no idea how I am up so early after the fabulous time we had last night!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hail Endymion (and, as Captain Ed says.........."WHO DAT SAY DEY GONNA BEAT DEM SAINTS"!!!!!!!!!!!!) Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 16, 2010 Re: Okeano My Dear Friends........ Also last evening Syd and I (along with Spartan President, Bob Geraci, and his lovely...and talented....Wife, Carol) attended the Bal Masque of the wonderful krewe of Okeanos, held in the Armstrong Ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel. A lovely Ball Tableau, superb music, a beautiful Court in their white gowns, great food, and more fantastic company made the evening fantastic for us. A "tip of the Spartan Helmet" to Captain Bal.....First lady, Carol......the Officers, the Court, and the Krewe of Okeanos. You looked GREAT!!!!!!! Hail Okeanos.............. Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 16, 2010 Re: Pygmalion My Dear Friends........ Last evening Syd and I (along with Spartan President, Bob Geraci, and his lovely...and talented....Wife, Carol) attended the Bal Masque of the great Krewe of Pygmalion, held at the Marriott Hotel Grand Ballroom. What a beautiful and entertaining Ball. Wonderful costumes, great music, a beautiful Court, superb food, and great company made the evening a super success. Congrats to Captain Jack.....Captain's Shadow "Little" Jake (who, along with his beautiful Sister, stole the show), First lady, Sissy......President, Jake and the Officers, The Court, and the Krewe of Pygmalion. Professor Higgins could not have done better!!!!!!!!!! Hail Pygmalion.............. Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 9, 2010 Re: Centurions Ball My Dear Friends.......... This evening Syd and I (in the company of Sparta Jr. Captain...and our Grandson.... Brandon Bogle......Spartan President, Bob Geraci, and his lovely Wife, Carol.........and Spartan Treasurer, Frenchie Cheramie, and his lovely wife, Kathleen) were honored to attend the Centurions Bal Masque. Centurions always puts on a GREAT show........and they have a real blast with their Ball. The food was wonderful............the presentation was musical, beautiful, and fun........and the company was The Best........... Hail to the great Captain, Captain Emeritus, Officers, Court, and Krewe of Centurions.......... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 9, 2010 Re: Sparta Scenery My Dear Friends........... I, again, try to avoid superlatives when writing about my krewe.....so I will not say that Sparta has the "best Officers in Carnival". I will say, however, that there are none any better!!!!!!!!! Today.....Frenchie Cheramie, Mike Carlson, Kenny Beck, Ron Kogos, Joe Exnicious, and Bob Geraci all joined me at the Pontchartrain Center...and gave up their Saturday...to work on Scenery for our Sparta Bal Masque (much of the time spent on a special prop for this Captain's entrance). I want to say not only "thank you" to these wonderful gentlemen, but also tell them (and all of our Officers) that Sparta would be nothing if not for their dedication and talents. That also goes for our Float Lieutenants and many, many Krewe Members that help throughout the year. We are, indeed, family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 7, 2010 Re: Throw me something from downunder My Dear Friends............ Got this reply (below) from my "Beginning of Carnival" email from our dear friend, Brandon Mary (Captain Emeritus of the Krewe of Babylon), who is "roughing it" living in Australia! Throw a few "shrimp on the barbie" for us, Brandon......... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" ----------------------------------------------------------- Love the report Cap! Brandon........ |
January 7, 2010 Re: Carnival's Here My Dear Friends........ Well.......It's official..........Carnival 2010 is here! Last evening (on King's Day) over 35 crazy Spartan Family Members met at the Louisiana Pizza Kitchen at the corner of Carrollton and St. Charles to eat....and then march out into the cold to view the first official parade of the Carnival season.........The Phunny Phorty Phellows..........pass on their streetcar. A grand time was had by all......and dessert, of course, consisted of King Cake (thanks to the generosity of Bob and Carol Geraci and my wife, Syd) And so...........from the Captain, Officers, Court, and Krewe of The Knights of Sparta........HAPPY CARNIVAL TO ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
January 5, 2010 Re: Matthew Hedrick IV Reigns Over Cub Scout Parade My Dear Friends.......... Below are the details for Matthew Hedrick IV (Spartan Herald....and now Cub Scout King) to reign as King over his Cub Scout Bal Masque and Parade........... Hope you will be on hand to "bow to His Majesty"'.............. Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Cub Scout Parade As some of you know Matthew will be serving as King of Pack 117’s Cub Scout Parade. Several of you have asked for the dates & times of the Cub Scout Ball & Parade. The Ball will be January 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the gym at St. Christopher School in Metairie. The parade will be on January 30 beginning at 10:00 a.m. The parade starts at St. Benilde School winding through the streets around Cleary and ending at St. Christopher’s gym. |
December 29, 2009 Re: Captains Meeting My Dear Friends............ Today the majority of New Orleans Carnival Captains met with members of our New Orleans Police to review policies, etc. for the upcoming season. I, along with Spartan President (and Parade Chairman) Bob Geraci, attended the meeting. I am disheartened to tell you that no representatives of our city government were on hand for the meeting. For the most part, our discussion involved procedural matters between the Carnival Krewes and the Police......and, as always, our Police Force is doing a great job in coordinating and helping all of the parades. Of course, the subject of the Gallier Hall Carnival Stands was brought and, with the help of Arthur Hardy, the Captains on hand (a majority, but not all of the New Orleans Captains) unanimously passed a resolution calling on the city government to reverse its decision and erect the Carnival reviewing stands. This resolution will be sent to the Mayor and Council Members. I will also report that I believe that, as of the end of our meeting, all of the krewes represented had already secured alternate reviewing stands if the Gallier stands are not put up. This is, of course, a necessary step..........but a sad day for the history and tradition of Carnival in New Orleans.......... Looking forward to the start of Carnival............... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
December 27, 2009 Re: The Digest My Dear Friends......... We note also that our friends Willie and Marion Clark are, again, publishing the "Mardi Gras Digest" Magazine, packed with many articles about our Carnival celebration. I am not quite sure where it is available, but I know you can go to their web site - www.mardigrasdigest.com - for information. Best of luck to this newly published periodical......... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
December 27, 2009 Re: It's Guide Time My Dear Friends........... A sure sign that Carnival is approaching is the yearly release of our dear friend's (Arthur Hardy) Mardi Gras Guide. As boldly stated on the cover.....it is the "Complete Companion to the Parade Season" and gives history, interesting articles, parade days-routes-times-themes-etc. I urge you to pick up your copy soon......and get the inside scoop on this year's Carnival festivities (and.......no, Arthur is not giving me a "kick-back".....although that's not a bad idea at that!!!!) Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
December 24, 2009 Re: Getting interesting My Dear Friends......... Now, I have just finished an interview with WDSU -TV 6 that will air at either 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. on the same subject of the Gallier Hall Carnival Stands........ Hope you view it.......... Give me your critique!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
December 24, 2009 Re: Masked Captain on the air My Dear Friends........... Things move fast in TV land.......... It is now 11:45 a.m. and I have already completed an interview with WWL-TV on the subject of the Gallier Hall Carnival Stands (they just contacted me several hours ago). It will air tonight (Christmas Eve) on Channel 4 (WWL-TV) on either the 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. news. Again......I tried to be respectful and stick to the facts (of course, as I see them). I hope you agree with my points. If you do......please tell me. If not.........please also tell me so that we might have an open dialog on the subject. My very best to all in Carnival Land............ Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" -------------------------------------------------------- Story from WDSU-TV (MSN.com) (click here) |
December 24, 2009 Re: TV takes interest My Dear Friends......... The continuing saga of our Gallier Hall Stands has taken a more public turn. I have been contacted by WWL-TV to see if we can get together today to do a television interview on this subject. As is our tradition.......if the interview does come off, I will be shown only as the "Masked Captain of Sparta" and will, as always, do my best to keep the dignity and honor of The Knights of Sparta, and Carnival in general, at the forefront. I will keep you posted on progress.......... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
December 23, 2009 Re: Some Nerve! My Dear Friends........ I came home today to find an invitation in my mail from Mayor C. Ray Nagin to attend, as Captain of Sparta, a "King Cake Party" at Gallier Hall on January 6th to celebrate the opening of the Carnival Season. Most of you know of the Mayor's decision to cut funding for the traditional Carnival stands at Gallier Hall (and all other stand locations). I, personally, think that it is a further "slap in the face" to the Carnival Krewes to now be invited to that same Gallier Hall for the Mayor's "Party" to celebrate a holiday that he obviously feels is less than important to our city and its well being! I would like to hear from you (especially my fellow Mardi Gras Captains, Officers, and Krewe Members) as to your thoughts on this. I certainly do now wish to be disrespectful to the Mayor or to our City.............but, how much guff are we expected to take? I can only tell you that this Captain will decline the invitation unless our Mayor comes to his senses about this issue............. Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
December 20, 2009 Re: Bellingrath Gardens Trip Wow...........What a day!!!!!!! Our Sparta trip to Bellingrath Gardens was a huge success........ We stopped at Old Time Pottery, The Mobile Flea Market, Panera Bread (for soup and sandwiches), Hobby Lobby, and toured the Gardens at night to see all of the wonderful light displays. It was a beautiful and crisp day and evening........and a great time was had by all. Of note is the fact that (while others did some shopping) Spartan President, Bob Geraci, and his lovely wife, Carol, stopped by the Mobile Greyhound Park Adoption Agency and adopted a "Sister" for their doggy, "Cheerio". Her name is "Blinky", and she should be coming home to her new "Daddy and Mommy" on Wednesday. Congratulations to Bob and Carol on the new addition to the Geraci Family! Again..........Happy Holidays to you all........... Best.............. The "Elf Yourself" Captain and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta |
December 17, 2009 Re: Sad Day for Carnival Tradition My Dear Friends........... I certainly avoid ascending my "cyber soap box" whenever possible. However, I must report on Carnival happenings as they happen....and, this time, I will also comment on them. It was announced today that the Mayor of New Orleans will make sweeping cuts in city services including, but far from limited to, discontinuing the decades old tradition of having Carnival reviewing stands erected in front of historic Gallier Hall and across the street at Lafayette Square. Now.....I certainly do not wish to put undo importance on this tradition....especially in light of the myriad problems that face our city. However, Carnival is "part and parcel" of New Orleans history, its present, and its future well being. I refer you also to the independent financial impact study of Carnival that was released just the other day that outlined the countless millions of dollars that Carnival brings to the city each year. In light of such an income generating entity, it seems a poor "thank you" to the fine people who pour their time, talents, and money into Mardi Gras to so unceremoniously do away with such a wonderful tradition as the Carnival reviewing stands at Gallier. Perhaps, as I have heard, there is a "hidden agenda" in the Mayor's targeting of Carnival........and perhaps not. I am certainly no authority on New Orleans politics and/or financial intricacies. I only know that I try to do what is best for our city..........my krewe....and our Carnival traditions. Time, I know, will tell who is right....and who is wrong. And so, my dear friends, as usual..........when life give us lemons.......we make Lemon King Cake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Carnival will survive.....and continue to bring joy and hope to our fair city.......no matter what the adversity. Best.............. December 10, 2009 Re: Sparta Holiday Party My Dear Friends........... What an evening we had at the Annual Knights of Sparta Happy Holidays Party. A wonderful attendance........Fantastic food......Great music (by Spartan Electronic Maestro, Bob Geraci).....and a merry gift exchange....all made for a perfect evening. Of course, we cannot thank the Queen Mom and Queen Dad (Jill and Joey Mercer) enough for, again, allowing us to hold this annual event at their incomparable Cedar Grove Tchoupitoulas Plantation. (In all honesty........I cannot think of a more perfect venue for any party, event, or wedding than the Plantation. O.K., I know that the Mercers are like family, but the truth is the truth........and the Plantation is "The Best"). Hail, also, to our King and Queen (Henry and Katie) and their Court......who all had a wonderful time......... And so........From the Captain, the Officers, the King, the Queen, the Court, the Krewe, all of the Spartan Ladies, and all of our Spartan Extended Family.....we wish each and every one of you a very, very Happy Holiday Season! HAIL SPARTA......AND HO, HO, HO!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
December 9, 2009 Re: .Family Gras Festival Off for 2010 My Dear Friends.......... Spartan Ft. Lt. Thanks, Jason, for keeping us informed..................and GO SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "Jefferson Parish officials today announced that Family Gras will not take place in 2010. Fearing the idea of competing with a New Orleans Saints Super Bowl appearance, officials decided to place the free music festival on a one year hiatus. December 2, 2009 Re: The Time of the Season My Dear Friends......... Did not even have to look at the calendar to know that it was the first week in December..........why??????????? November 30, 2009 Re: Cardi Gras a "Hot Rod" Success My Dear Friends......... Our "rescheduled" Annual Cardi Gras Car Show was an overwhelming success......... The weather could not have been better.........and everyone had a wonderful time. Of note is the fact that Sparta took time to honor the memory of Steve Jones (Sergeant at Arms of the Greater New Orleans Corvette Club) who passed away this past week. We gave a special award in his honor, along with a donation in his name, to GNOCC. We'll miss you, Steve.......... Of course, Their Majesties were on hand to help pass out awards..........as was our Returning Princess (representing the Cystic Fibrosis Community). Henry, Katie, and Jessica were "Royal" in their duties! I want to thank our Sparta Officers, their Ladies, our Court Members, Float Lieutenants, and Members......who gave of their time and talents to assure our success. HAIL SPARTA................... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
November 20, 2009 Re: Mid City Coronation My Dear Friends............ This evening Syd and I (in the company of Spartan President, Bob Geraci, and his lovely Wife, Carol......and Spartan Captain Emeritus, Charles Andrews, and his lovely Wife, Patricia) were honored to attend the Coronation for the great Krewe of Mid City. Rounding out our table in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel (and adding to the honor of the evening) were Endymion Captain, Kenner Mayor Ed Muniz, and his lovely Wife, Peggy. I also had the good fortune to be the narrator for the evening's presentation. The only word that comes to mind is "perfect"........... The King (long time Mid City Officer, Brian Thumm), the Queen (and beautiful Wife of Mid City's President, Nicole Baird), the Court, the presentation, the music, the food..............all GREAT! A big wave of our Spartan Sword to the wonderful Captain, his lovely Lady (and returning Mid City Queen) Danielle, the Officers, the King, the Queen, the Court, and the Krewe of Mid City.......... Very Pretty.........Mid City!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. The Captain and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta |

This evening Syd and I (along with Spartan President, Bob Geraci, and his lovely Wife, Carol......Spartan Recording Secretary, Michael Vincent.....and Spartan Captain Emeritus, Charles Andrews, and his lovely Wife, Patricia) were honored to attend the Coronation for the Great Krewe Of Zeus. I also had the honor of narrating their presentation. Zeus, as always, was style and class personified......as they hosted a wonderful evening. It is a pleasure to share the "Coronation Weekend" with the Men of Zeus......... A "Tip of the Spartan Helmet" to the Great Captain, First Lady, Officers, King, Queen, and Court of Zeus for a brilliant night....... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
November 14, 2009 Re: The Spartan Coronation My Dear Friends............. 2:30 a.m............and I am just settling in from our wonderful Coronation Ball. I could, as I have said before, go on for hours about this evening.............however, I will try to spare you.............. Suffice it to say that the Coronation was wonderful. The decor was straight out of a beautiful fantasy world...........the presentation went off without a hitch.........the Court was sensational....the food was delicious.......the attendance was capacity........and the company was "the best". All hail to our Monarchs for 2010..........King Sparta LVIII (Henry Suthon).......and the Queen of Sparta for 2010 (Kathaleen Mercer). They are sooooooooooo regal!!!!!!!!! And Hail to our wonderful court............. My thanks to our Spartan Officers and their Ladies for all of their hard work that led to such a successful evening.......and also to our Ft. November 07, 2009 Pygmalion Coronation My Dear Friends............. Well........it seems as though some of you (maybe not many) have missed my Journal Entries while Syd and I have been out of town (or so I have heard). WELL.....take heart........I'm back!!!!! This evening Syd and I (along with a number of Carnival VIPs) were privileged to attend the Coronation Ball of the Krewe of Pygmalion........and it was wonderful.......... Held at the Marriott Hotel - Convention Center Blvd., their Coronation went off without a hitch. A highlight was the crowning of the Queen....who did not know that she was Queen this year..........SURPRISE!!!!!!!!!! October 7, 2009 Re: A family member on the mend My Dear Friends........ Many of you know Fran Markland (Former Queen of Iris.....Twice; Carrollton Family Members; and Sparta Family Member; and a whole lot of other Mardi Gras stuff). Fran had lower back reconstruction surgery yesterday (which is no little surgery), but we are happy to say that Joe Exnicious (Fran's "Main Man") has informed us that Fran is doing very well and may even be home by the weekend. We all love ya, Fran.....and you are in our prayers. Also, it's Wednesday.....so I'll take a day off and not remind you that our Spartan Soiree is this Friday - October 9th - 7 p.m. - Metairie Lions Hall See you at the Soiree............ Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
October 3, 2009 Re: Thoth My Dear friends: Syd and I have just returned from a wonderful evening with the Krewe of Thoth at their Coronation, held in the Grand Ballroom of the New Orleans Hilton Hotel. When Thoth puts on a party..........they really put on a party! The room and scenery were fantastic, their presentation was grand (including lovely color-coordinated Maids' dresses in light gold), the food was superb, and the company of many, many Carnival regulars was "the best". We are always honored to be counted among the legions of the "God of the Nile"....... Hail to the wonderful Captain and First Lady, the Officers, the King - Queen - and Court, and the Krewe of Thoth........ May Amon Ra smile upon you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. September 24, 2009 Re: Soiree will be Super My Dear Friends........... Just returned from a meeting of our Spartan Officers and Wives at the home of Spartan Soiree Chairman, Mike Carlson, and his lovely....and very hard working for Sparta....Wife, Trisha. This meeting was to put the finishing touches on plans for our Spartan Soiree (Italian Feast Night, Raffle, and Silent Auction). All that I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have "literally" thousands of dollars in prizes to raffle and for the Silent Auction Boards (many of which will be featured in over 25 "themed" gift baskets for every occasion imaginable). I can tell you that this is the "must be there" event of October!!!!!!!!!!! Please contact any Spartan Officer for dinner/event tickets, or raffle tickets (winner need not be present to win).....or email our Event Chairman (Mike Carlson) at mjcarlson72@cox.net. September 24, 2009 Re: Let the Coronations Begin My Dear Friends........ Well.......the season is, at last, upon us.........and Coronations are starting in earnest. Last Friday Spartan President, Bob Geraci.....his lovely Wife, Carol....Syd...and I helped The Krewe of Centurions stage a "repeat ball" for a nurses' convention at the Hilton Hotel. It was grand. Saturday then saw Bob and I at English Turn Country Club for the Coronation of Queen Cleopatra 37th and her lovely Court. I did the narration, while Bob conducted the band. A "palm branch" to the wonderful Captain, Officers, Court, and Krewe of Cleopatra for a superb evening. After Cleopatra's tableau, Bob and I dashed to the Marriot Hotel (where we had previously dropped off Syd, Carol, and Cherrie Scandurro...Lovely Lady of Centurions' Captain Emeritus....). They attended the first portion of the Centurions Coronation while Bob and I were with Cleopatra. Once we got there.....Centurions, as always, treated us royally. Dinner was great....and the Centurions King, Queen, and Court were magnificent. A "tip of the Spartan helmet" to the fantastic Captain (and his beautiful Wife, Barbara), the Officers, the King, the Queen, the Court, and the Krewe of Centurions. Rome was really "rock'in" last Saturday! It seems like there are Coronations every weekend through Thanksgiving.....so we will be busy....and I will, of course, keep you informed. Best.............. September 16, 2009 Re: A Night in China My Dear Friends...... Once, again, an overflow crowd graced our Royal Culinary Tour stop last evening at Panda King on the West Bank. We all had a great time.....especially those at a certain table whose laughter could be heard even on the North Shore......(just kidding.....we loved it) Our next stop will be at the "ever so swanky" Rocky & Carlo's in Chalmette on Tuesday, September 29th at 7 p.m. (the Sicilian Room...no less) RSVP soon.........and get out your white shrimp boots! August 31, 2009 Re: Happy Birthday to a great Captain My Dear Friends......... The Officers, Court, and Krewe of The Knights of Sparta wish The Captain of Thoth a very Happy Birthday.......... Of course, we must follow tradition in not revealing who that Captain is.........however, it is a coincidence that he shares his birthday with our dear friend, Penny Larsen!!!!!!!!! In any event......All Hail The Captain of Thoth on this Special Day.............. Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
August 30, 2009 Re: A Great Night for the Irish My Dear Friends.......... Spudley's Super Spuds was overflowing with Spartans this evening as we celebrated our latest stop on the Royal Culinary Tour. Of equal importance was the fact that the "Royal Consort", Bonnie Suthon, was celebrating her Birthday with us this evening.......Happy Birthday, Bonnie............ It was a great night for our King, Queen, Court, and the entire Spartan Family......... Hope to see all at our next stop (in 2 weeks) at The Panda King........ Best.............. August 23, 2009 Re: Thoth Summer Party My Dear Friends........... Syd and I have just returned from the Great Krewe of Thoth's Summer Dance and Party (where we enjoyed the company of Spartan President, Bob Geraci....His Lovely Wife, Carol....Spartan Captain Emeritus, Charles Andrews.....His Lovely Wife, Patricia....and many, many more Mardi Gras "regulars") Thoth, as always, put on a GREAT party.....and we were even treated to a "Pre-Mardi Gras Mini Parade" through the aisles of Mardi Gras World, featuring the 2010 Thoth Royalty. Hail to the Captain, Officers, Court, and Krewe of Thoth!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
August 9, 2009 Re: Good News, Sad News My Dear Friends........ Syd and I have just returned from several days out of town....and things in "Carnival Land" are moving right along. Today the Officers and I (along with the Officers' Ladies) met with our Sr. Court Members and their families at the home/studio of Darryl Schmitt (our Official Spartan Photographer) to take formal pictures of our Court...and to show our Maids their costume art work. To say the least...it was a joyous occasion. Our Court Ladies are beautiful...and our costumes will be equally as lovely! As always....the King and Queen's costumes will remain a closely guarded secret until Bal Masque night....but they, too, are going to be spectacular! On a sad note, we found out upon our return that the Stepmother of Spartan Bal Masque Vice-General Chairman (and Officer in Thoth, as well as former King Thoth) John Tessitore and his lovely wife, Shirley, had passed away last week while we were out of town. Most of you know that there are no finer people in Carnival than John and Shirley....and our hearts and prayers go out to them and their family on this loss. Much more to come.......... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" The Captain and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta |
July 29, 2009 Re: Family and Friends Dinners My Dear Friends........ Last evening brought to a close our 2010 Season Sparta "Family & Friends" Dinner Series, with 35 folks gathering at Schnell's Restaurant on the West Bank for food and fun. Not to worry, however. Because August begins our 2010 Sparta "Royal Culinary Tour" to honor our King, Queen, and their Court. A full schedule of the bi-weekly dinners will be out in the next few days. Our first stop on the "tour", however, will be on Tuesday, August 18th, at The Italian Pie in Harahan. Watch for the tour schedule in an upcoming email.......and join us for all of the fun!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" The Captain and the Officers of The Knights of Sparta |
July 21, 2009 Re: Great Meeting My Dear Friends........... Last evening we had another great Sparta Krewe Meeting. Of course, it was a summer meeting....and our attendance was not "over the top". However, those who did attend had a wonderful time....and some fantastic food. I want to tell you all again how much our Officers contribute to our success. Last evening, as always, the Officers provided all of the food, cooked it, served it, and cleaned up after the meeting. I hope everyone associated with Sparta knows how much our Officers do for us (and also some of our Lieutenants and krewe members, too). Our Officers not only take no "free bees" during the year for events, etc.....they also contribute their time and money (a great deal of time....and money) to assure our continued success. Their dedication, in great part, is what has cemented our success. HAIL SPARTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" The Captain and the Officers of the Knights of Sparta |
July 9, 2009 Re: Royal Birthday My Dear Friends......... 25 years ago (tomorrow - July 10th) Syd, the Kids, and I moved into our present home. Now, that alone (while being a very special occasion for the Mulnicks) would not rate the Mardi Gras Journal. However, as we were moving in, our across-the-street neighbors were putting an "It's a Girl" sign in their yard welcoming the newest addition to the Mercer/Strain Family....Little Katie. Little did we know that 25 years later "Little Katie" would be getting ready to reign over The Knights of Sparta as our Queen! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our incoming Queen.........Miss Kathaleen Mary Mercer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
June 29, 2009 Re: Sparta dinner My Dear Friends......... Well.......we are getting to the point where we have to be careful to find venues for our dinners that are big enough to hold all of us.....and we LOVE it! Over 60 happy folks in our Spartan Family (and Extended Family) joined us this evening at the Italian Pie for food and fun. The Officers and I thank all of those who were with us this evening...and invite everyone else to join us for our next dinner (TBA) in July...... Hail Sparta.......... Best.............. June 21, 2009 Re: King on the Mend My Dear Friends........ Have not passed on much news about King Frenchie lately.....because things have been pretty quiet. His Highness and the Royal Consort have spent the past few weeks in Rochester, NY with their son, Jeffery...and have just returned to Cleveland for an appointment on Tuesday. We are hoping that they might allow the "Royal Entourage" to head back to New Orleans after this appointment....but, we will have to wait and see. In any event....Frenchie is feeling very well and thanks all of you for your thoughts and prayers......... We will keep you posted........... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
June 21, 2009 Re: A Star is Born My Dear Friends....... Syd and I (in the company of Spartan President Bob "Sparta LVI" Geraci; his lovely wife, Carol; Spartan Costume Wizards, Matt and Sally Hedrick...and Matt III and Jeanne Hedrick; and Spartan "Belle", Raven O'Rourke) have just returned from a wonderful production of the "Young Peoples' Version of The Wizard of Oz" at UNO. Acting and Singing one of the "Starring Roles" was none other than Spartan Herald, Matthew Hedrick IV. Matt's performance was dazzling....and we hear that consideration for a Tony Award may be forthcoming!!!!!!!!!!! In any event.......it was a wonderful afternoon....and we congratulate Matt IV on a fantastic performance......... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
June 17, 2009 Re: King LVIII & RC visit aristocracy My Dear Friends............ Below is a note (with the attached picture) that I received from our 2010 King (Henry Suthon) and his lovely wife, Bonnie. It seems that "Henry the 58th" is hob-knobbing with fellow royalty on the Continent........... We wish our Monarch and Royal Consort well on their "Official State Visit".....and hope they have a safe journal back to the Metairie Palace!
Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" ___________________________________________________________________ Subject: King LVIII & RC visit aristocracy My Dearest Captain, I think you will be pleased to learn that King (Henry) LVIII and his lovely royal consort, Bonnie have recently visited with Saxony nobility in Dresden, Germany. June 15, 2008 Re: Newe Orleans Floral Trail My Dear Friends......... Yesterday Syd and I (in the company of Spartan Officer...and King Sparta XLIV....Michael Vincent, his lovely Mother....Jean, Spartan Family Member...and the reigning Queen of Excalibur....Sandra Guarisco, the Queen of Sparta for 2008....Shayna Lynn Beevers, and 2008 Queen Mom....Raylynn Beevers) were honored to attend the 73rd Pageant of The Greater New Orleans Floral Trail. Festivities began at Jackson Square.....proceeded to a carriage ride.....and ended with a presentation and dinner at the New Orleans Sheraton Hotel. I also had the honor of narrating the presentation at the Sheraton.......and it was GRAND. Of course, other Spartan Family Members were involved, too. The current President of Floral Trail is Sally Hedrick.....Spartan Costumer, with her Husband, Matt, as a Past President and Member of the Board. Matt and Sally's entire family was also involved..... Also, one of the Beautiful Maids for the 2009-2010 season was Sparta's own "Belle" (and 2008 Maid) Raven O'Rourke. Also in the Court was Michael and Jean's Niece (and 2009 Spartan Lady in Waiting) Skylar McLeod. All in all....it was a wonderful day for Greater New Orleans Floral Trail......and a pretty great day for Spartan Family Members as well.................. Best.............. June 11. 2009 Re: Spartan Herald Shines on Stage My Dear Friends.......... Below is an email from Jeanne Hedrick (Mother of Spartan Herald, Matthew Hedrick, IV....and remember that Matthew is also the Grandson of Spartan Costume Masters, Sally and Matt Hedrick). It seems that Matt IV is "strutting his stuff" on stage in The Wizard of Oz. I know that Syd and I plan to be there........We hope that many of you will also be on hand to applaud for Matthew! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" The Captain of The Knights of Sparta Thank You Jeanne Hedrick

June 9, 2009 Re: Hail Queen Sparta 2014 My Dear Friends............. First........I guess you have noticed that you have not heard from me for a week (and I am sure you are cheering about not having to read my waffling for a few days). However, Syd and I are back from our short trip to Ohio for my Sister's Dance Review and planning for her dance company's performance in our 2010 Sparta Bal Masque......and now you must put up with continued issues of the "Mardi Gras Journal". Second.....and more importantly.....below is an email from our very proud "Queen Mom" (who will again be Queen Mom in 2014) about our own Halie Ducote......Enjoy.....and Go Archers!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Everyone,

May 31, 2009 Re: A Special Anniversary My Dear Friends........ Now....some of you (well many of you) may have noticed that our Captain Emeritus and his lovely Wife, Patricia, were absent from the Fish Fry last evening. Ordinarily that would not happen. However, there was a very good reason for their absence. Yesterday was Charles' and Patricia's 50 Wedding Anniversary.....and they celebrated the occasion at Antoine's (one of their favorite restaurants). I assure you that it was a very unintentional coincidence that scheduled a Sparta event on this very important occasion for Charles and Patricia....and I know that they missed being with all of us.....as we missed being with them. I know, however, that the Officers, Court, Members, Friends, and Families of The Knights of Sparta (along with all of our Brother and Sister Krewes) wish our Captain Emeritus and First Lady Emeritus a VERY HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
May 31, 2009 Re: Sparta Fish Fry My Dear Friends........... WOW..................What an evening! Our Annual Sparta Summer Party and Fish Fry was an overwhelming success. We had a capacity crowd....great food......great music.....great prizes......and fun, fun, fun! There are so many people to thank - and if I took the time to thank each of you by name I would be writing for hours.....so, I will try to summarize: Thank you to our wonderful Officers, Officers' Ladies, and our Family Members for such a great effort - Thank you to our Float Lts. and Krewe Members who helped so much - Thank you to our Court Members (and even a former and future Queen who stayed in the kitchen to help) who pitched in - Thank you to all of our guests who came to eat, drink, have fun, and participate in our raffle - and thank you to all of the friends of Sparta who give of themselves and their time and talents to make us a success! And, last but certainly not least, thank you to our incoming King and Queen for their kindness and generosity. I hope that every Captain feels the joy that I feel this evening in knowing that my Krewe is a true Spartan Family......and we sure do know how to throw a party!!!!!!!!!!!! Hail Sparta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
May 26, 2009 Re: Sparta 2010 Senior Court Meeting My Dear Friends......... Last Sunday Syd and I hosted a "First Get-Together" for the 2010 Sr. Court (King, Queen, Maids, Dukes) and the Officers and their Ladies....to welcome our Court Members to our Spartan Family. I will (as usual) try to refrain from "superlatives".....However, our Queen and Maids are as lovely a Court as I have seen, and seemed to "gel" immediately into a wonderful group. It was "all smiles" on Sunday.......and the Officers and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the 2010 Carnival Season has in store for Sparta.............. Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
May 26, 2009 Re: Pegasus Not Parading in 2010 My Dear Friends......... The news today was not good for Carnival. The Krewe of Pegasus, according to WDSU News, will not parade in 2010. Pegasus (whose parade followed our Sparta Parade on the first Saturday evening of the parade season) is a long-standing part of the Carnival scene...and we will miss their parade very much. Every time a parade has to cancel (or, worse yet, goes out of existence), Carnival is weakened. Certainly some of the members of these parades will find their way into other organizations. However, many long time riders may just "call it quits" without their traditional parade to ride. This lessens the ranks of the "Carnival Faithful". Of course Carnival is well represented by the "Big Guys" of the second weekend, etc.....and we love those glittering parades. However, the traditional krewes, I hope, will always have a place in the hearts of true Carnival lovers......and I am saddened to see any of those krewes go by the wayside. Here's hoping that Pegasus will emulate the Phoenix...and rise again from the ashes of 2010........... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
May 22, 2009 Re: Happy Birthday Queen Sparta 2014 My Dear Friends.......... This evening Syd and I (in the company of the Jr. Captain....our Grandson Brandon, Spartan Officer...and King Sparta XLIV...Michael Vincent, and his lovely Mother....Jean) attended the 13th Birthday Party of Future Spartan Queen, Halie Ducote. Halie's parents, John and Debbie.....her big sister (and reigning Queen of Sparta), Megan.....and Grandmother, Vita put on a lovely party for what seemed like about a million 12-13 year olds. The party was fun.....and, of course, I did not understand a word of any of the songs that were played (but then neither did my grandparents when I was 13)!!!!!!!!!!!!! In any event.....we say HAPPY 13TH BIRTHDAY, HALIE.................we can't wait till you are Queen!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
May 22, 2009 Re: Happy Aniversary My Dear Friends...... Syd and I enjoyed a lovely evening at the Plimsoll Club on Wednesday with Spartan Ft. Lt., Mark Katz, and Spartan Ball Committee Chairman, San Nicholas. Ronny Kole played piano, and the dinner was wonderful. Now....that in itself, while very enjoyable, would not merit the "Mardi Gras Journal". However, we ran into Jack and Melinda Richard (Melinda being a former Queen of Iris...and Jack being a Spartan Member) and they were celebrating (along with their children) their 25th Anniversary.............now, that is an occasion that merits congratulations! So............Happy 25th Anniversary to Jack and Melinda...........and many, many more!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
May 17, 2009 Re: "What a Night!" My Dear Friends......... This evening was a very special night...........2 "black tie" affairs.....and in May, too!!!!!!!!!!!! First, Syd and I (along with many Carnival Friends) celebrated the 70th Birthday of Maurice Olivier (Captain Emeritus of Centurions) and all around Carnival "Great Guy". We all should look (and act) as wonderfully as Maurice at age 70 (not that 70 is so old....it just looks GREAT on Maurice) Next, we (and many other Carnival Captains, Officers, and other VIKs......Very Important Krewepeople) were honored to attend a dinner hosted by Bill and Cheryl Chaucer at the Royal Palm on the West Bank. I have to say that I have seldom dined at such an opulent and beautiful venue. Bill will be the King of Zeus this coming year....and Cheryl will be a Maid in Excalibur. Also, they both will have very important roles in other organizations in upcoming years (however, I will have to check with the traditions of those organizations before I "let the cat out of the bag" about their involvement because secrecy is sometimes part and parcel of Carnival. Let's just say that the Chaucers will be "Royally Involved" in Carnival for quite some time! Of course the food.....the atmosphere.....and everything else at both of these wonderful functions was perfect. However, the greatest thrill was just being with so many fantastic people. That, in my opinion, is the greatest thing about being involved in Mardi Gras. Syd and I are so excited about Carnival 2010.......and we hope you are, too......... Much more to come........... Best.............. "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |

March 24, 2009 Re: Endymion Annual Meeting My Dear Friends......... |
March 15, 2009 Re: Mardi Gras Journal Entry....The Luck of the Irish My Dear Friends...... The forecast for today said rain, rain, rain......But, St. Patrick said sunny and warm! As usual, the Metairie St. Patrick's Day Parade rolled under clear skies and warm temperatures...and it was, as always, spectacular. Syd and I, as we always do, spent the day at the home of our dear friends (for over 30 years), Doug and Sue Smith, and staked out the corner of Severn and 42nd St. to watch the parade. We saw so many friends, both in the parade and walking the parade route. Endymion Captain, Ed Muniz, resplendent in his green vest, greeted us warmly from his convertible, and other Endymion VIPs (Peggy Muniz, Dan Kelly and Family, Ron Messina and Family, Bobby Moser and Family, etc.) showered us with throws from their annual Float in the parade. Iris "Husbands", John and Terry Bruno (and other members of the Bruno Family) were in one of the many walking groups....and they looked very dashing. Carrollton's Joe Exnicios also looked great as he walked by in his tux. We also saw Bea Cottingham....and are very glad Gene is doing well after his leg surgery. Centurion's Leonard Kinler was also aboard their float...and was super generous....as was Endymion's "Little" Chris Mendel. I am sure that I have missed some who rode (and, of course, we were only on one side of the floats).....so please tell me who I missed and I will pass it along. In any event.....the St. Patrick's Day Parade is Metairie was an overwhelming success.... Happy St. Patti's Day from Sparta!!!!!!!!! Best....... "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat"

March 10, 2009 Re: St. Joseph’s Altar My Dear Friends....... Francie Plaia (Family Matriarch)....Bob (Spartan President) Geraci....his lovely wife, Carol...and the entire Plaia-Geraci Family have asked me to pass this along to all...... March 10, 2009 Re: Mardi Gras Journal...,Back in Action My Dear Friends........ We, here at Sparta, hope that you had a wonderful Carnival Season. You have not heard from me for the past week due to the fact that Cox Cable (my internet provider) was having problems with "bulk emails" (tossing them all out as spam). Hopefully that is now fixed.....and The Captain's Mardi Gras Journal will roll on. St. Patti's Day is coming up......and more parades!!!!!!! Best.......... "Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat" |
